Song of Songs – Light on light

Sacred love in Christian and Sufi tradition

Considered as one of the most touching set of texts of the Old Testament, the Song of Songs has been interpreted in many different ways by theologists throughout the centuries. The poems speak about love in an exceptionally evocative way and became a symbol of sensuality and sexuality. The traditional catholic reading see it as a metaphor of the love between Christ and the Church, the Hebraic reading, also respected by Lutherans, see it as an ideal model of a perfect love as wished by God.

Many composers of the 16th and 17th century, using the great power of poetry, playing with the multiple and equivoque meanings of the text, used the Song of Songs in their music.

In a very similar poetical and mystical way, Islamic poetry of Sufi roots often mentioned as “light on light” uses the same metaphors to represent love and piety.

This program presents then baroque compositions based on the Song of Songs written by great masters such as Giovanni Bovicelli, Alessandro Grandi, Tarquinio Merula, Giacomo Carissimi… and compositions proposed by the Syrian oud player Khaled Aljaramani on mystical sufi poetry.

In a society in which everyone feels the moral and spiritual chaos around, this program talks about love and its supernatural power, whatever culture, religion or origin it has.

Heinrich Schütz published his second opus of Symphoniae Sacrae in 1647, just a year before the peace treatises of Westphalia finally put an end to the thirty years war (1618-1648). Recent demographic studies claim that 60% of the population of the Holy Roman Empire and central Europe perished during the terrible conflict. In this particular post-war context, and considering that Advent is one of the most important time of the christian year, the celebrations carried multiple meanings and values. Advent was a time of conversion, patience and hope and the typical relation to time can be felt in the choices of texts set to music by 17th century composers. A relation to the past, related to the prophecy mentioned in the old testament upon the Messiah’s arrival, to the present, with voices heard on the spot, actually welcoming Jesus among the people’s hearts and to the future, looking forward to its coming glory at the end of time.
